Illustration And Illustrators

Thanks to the Paleolithic humans for a number of great inventions and discoveries by them, of which, the illustration concept is highly significant. Through their cave paintings, they taught, what would otherwise be not achievable using a language, more clearly and effectively to the common population of the succeeding era about their livelihood and practices, which helped us discover more about our history and other significant discoveries by them. These cave paintings indeed paved way for the modern illustration techniques, in where various forms of art and its medium are used in projecting the required purposes to the intended audiences conveniently and clearly!

Thus, the illustration concept is nothing but the art form of explaining the concepts, which could illuminate any reader beyond the differences of language, region and surprisingly, the age-factor too! These art forms can be one or more of the following, such as the drawings, the animations, the paintings, the modeling and so on. By using any one or more of the above forms the required message is conveyed to the readers, which is undoubtedly intelligible when compared to the complex texts and the ambiguous descriptions.

An illustrator is a person responsible for producing the above forms of visual interpretations that elucidate the matter of significance to the audiences. He/she may or may not utilize the computer technology to create the required illustration, which of course depends on the type of illustration techniques he/she employs.

Illustration vs Fine Arts

If the illustration is nothing but the pictorial form of representing the messages then, why is it given the separate status and why not considered as the fine arts? Surely, both are creative arts and/or its forms then, where comes the dissimilarity? All such questions are sure to haunt any novice illustrator or the common man, who has no other connections with the art, except appreciating and enjoying it. Not to worry, only by discovering the answers to such questions any beginner would be able to comprehend the illustration concept much better and therefore, it is to help such minds the following reasons are provided.

An illustration, although uses the pictorial form, is mainly intended to convey something to the required audiences and therefore, always based on specific purposes. It may or may not be accompanied by the textual messages but, its purpose never deviates. For example, a pictorial representation of ‘how to operate an iPod’ although contains the designs and the diagrams, cannot be deemed the fine art because its intention is different. Here, rather paying the higher importance only to the creativity and the beauty of the art, the emphasize is equally or even more on the objective and conveying it appropriately to the intended audiences.

Whereas, the fine arts, even though might convey some singular message(s) of the artist, it is not mandatory that everybody comprehends it and rather only the trained minds and the trained eyes could do so efficiently. Therefore, to the common audiences, all that reach are the creativity, beauty and the skilled mind of the artist, which is where the success of the fine arts lies! Thus, the purposes of the both mediums of art differ and hence, the different status.
