The Traditional Vs Digital Illustration

There are different types of illustration techniques used, of which the following ones are widely known

  • Pencil Illustrations
  • Water color illustrations
  • Woodcutting
  • Pen-and-Ink illustrations
  • The digital illustration

All the others, except the digital one, can be called the traditional forms of illustration as they completely require manual effort without the intervention of any tools or the computer technology. Again, leaving the woodcutting the other forms of illustrations could be visualized using the digital illustration technique and if so, then what is the difference between the traditional and the digital one?

The traditional technique, as the name implies uses the relevant traditional tools such as the paints, pencils, inks, brushes, papers and so on and therefore, requires the illustrator to invest a considerable amount of time and energy. Also, the resources used for different traditional techniques are uncontrollable as one cannot exactly predict how many papers or what amount of paints would produce the desired result. Therefore, the wastage is quite uncontrollable. The productivity is also less as any human could only produce a certain amount of output, if not supported by any sophistications.

On the other hand, the digital illustration technique is favored by the computer technology and the associated advanced software and therefore, overcomes the demerits of the traditional illustration techniques. But, not to deny, the simplicity of the traditional technique is what we miss in certain areas, which cannot be replaced by the extravagance of the digital illustration technique. Therefore, understand your requirement and utilize the right technique to gain the maximum required benefits.
